It is said that history often echoes itself in ways both profound and poetic. On 4 January 2025, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church witnessed a moment of such poetic resonance as the St. John Henry Newman Syro-Malankara Catholic Mission was inaugurated in Cambridge, United Kingdom. This mission, named in honour of St. John Henry Newman, also evokes the memory of Venerable Archbishop Mar Ivanios, often hailed as the “Newman of the East.” Both men, separated by centuries and continents, were united in their pursuit of truth and their unwavering commitment to the faith.
In Faith and Dedication
The inaugural ceremony, held at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Cambridge, was led by Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Kuriakose Thadathil, the Coordinator of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in the United Kingdom. The event commenced with the solemn Holy Qurbono, a spiritual dedication of the mission to God and the community it will serve.
In his opening address, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Kuriakose Thadathil read the Decree of Establishment for the mission, marking it as a beacon of faith for the Malankara Catholic diaspora in the United Kingdom.
Honouring the Legacy of Newman and Mar Ivanios
The mission’s naming is a profound reflection of its purpose. St. John Henry Newman, a luminary of the Church, is celebrated for his theological depth and his bridge-building between tradition and modernity. Likewise, Mar Ivanios, often referred to as the “Newman of the East,” was a visionary leader whose return to the Catholic fold brought the richness of the Malankara tradition into communion with the universal Church. It is fitting that this mission, established in Cambridge—a city deeply intertwined with Newman’s intellectual journey—carries the spirit of both these great figures.
Dignitaries and Messages of Encouragement
The occasion was graced by Adv. Baiju Thittala, the Hon. Mayor of Cambridge, who served as the Chief Guest. In his address, the Mayor commended the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church for its efforts in nurturing faith among its members and fostering a sense of community in Cambridge.
Mr. Rony Jacob, General Secretary of the National Council, offered a felicitation address, reflecting on the significance of the mission as a spiritual home for the faithful. The event also welcomed the presence of Rev. Fr. John Aluvila (Rome), whose contributions to the Church were warmly acknowledged.
Gratitude and Vision for the Future
Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Thiruvalil, the Priest-in-Charge of the mission, extended a heartfelt welcome to all attendees, highlighting the mission’s vision to serve as a sanctuary of faith, culture, and community for the Malankara Catholic diaspora. In his vote of thanks, Mr. Pradeep Mathew expressed deep gratitude to all who made this day possible, acknowledging the efforts and dedication that brought this mission to life.
A Journey of Faith Begins
The establishment of the St. John Henry Newman Syro-Malankara Catholic Mission marks a significant chapter in the Church’s mission to serve its faithful worldwide. Like Newman and Mar Ivanios, who both journeyed in faith to find truth and fulfilment, this mission embarks on its journey to be a spiritual anchor for the Syro-Malankara Catholic community in Cambridge and beyond.
Let us pray that this mission, rooted in the legacies of two great men of faith, continues to flourish and bring the light of Christ to all it serves. May the faithful find in this mission a home for their hearts and a wellspring of spiritual renewal.
