Rev. Fr. Kolanjikombil Cheriyan, a retired priest of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, passed away on 23rd September 2024, at the age of 77. Born on October 6, 1946, in Puliyoor, Chengannur, Fr. Cheriyan was ordained on May 5, 1973, at his home parish, Bethlehem Malankara Catholic Church, Puliyoor. His long and devoted priestly ministry spanned several parishes, including Poruvazhi, Pavumba, and Mainagapally.
Fr. Cheriyan served as Parish Priest in numerous parishes such as Thottapally, Cheruthana, and others, before moving to Pandanadu, Eramathoor, and beyond. His pastoral care extended over many communities until 2008, where his warm spirit touched many hearts. Alongside his parish duties, Fr. Cheriyan also dedicated himself to social service. He was appointed as Director of Malankara Fisheries in Thottappally from 1975 to 1983 and later served as Chaplain of Assisi Boys Home, Ala, for over two decades. Additionally, he supported the spiritual needs of St. Anne’s Convent in Chengannur from 1993 to 2019.
Throughout his ministry, Fr. Cheriyan advocated against social evils like dowry, which he saw as an oppressive practice deeply entrenched in the community. His own reflections on dowry were captured in a field study, where he expressed his concerns about the financial and moral burdens it placed on families, especially in Christian communities. He often spoke about the harsh realities families faced, especially how dowry was demanded under various guises, contributing to financial hardships and perpetuating injustice.
As a shepherd to many and a voice for the vulnerable, Rev. Fr. Kolanjikombil Cheriyan’s legacy will be remembered for his tireless service to his parishioners, his stand against societal wrongs, and his deep devotion to his faith. His loss will be profoundly felt by the Syro-Malankara Catholic community, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
