Mangaluru witnessed a grand celebration of Ecumenical Christmas Sauhardha 2024 on the evening of December 14 at the Cascia Church Hall, Morgan’s Gate. This lively gathering of faith and unity was jointly organised by the All-Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights (Western Zone) and the Mangaluru Christian Council.
Representing the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mor Makarios, Bishop of the Syro-Malankara Diocese of Puttur, graced the occasion with his presence. Addressing the gathering, he extended warm Christmas greetings and underscored the significance of love, harmony, and shared joy during the Christmas season. His words reflected the enduring mission of the Syro-Malankara Church to promote peace and mutual respect across communities.
The event was presided over by Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of the Mangaluru Diocese, who shared an inspiring message of peace and goodwill. Highlighting the transformative power of the Christmas spirit, he encouraged attendees to embody the true gift of Christmas by sharing time and joy with the elderly, the sick, and the underprivileged.
Also in attendance was His Grace Yakub Mar Elias, Bishop of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Brahmavar Diocese, who joined the bishops in spreading the message of unity and goodwill. Bishop Hemachandra Kumar of the CSI Karnataka Southern Diocese also shared reflections on harmony and friendship inspired by the Christmas message.
The evening began with a solemn prayer service led by Charles S, diocesan vicar of the Believers Eastern Church for Karnataka and Goa, followed by the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries present. Among the prominent attendees were Maxim Noronha, vicar general of the Mangaluru Diocese; Sr. Lilly Pereira, provincial superior of Bethany; Sr. Leena V J, provincial superior of SRA; and several priests, pastors, religious sisters, and lay faithful.
Cultural programmes added vibrancy to the celebrations, with carols, skits, and dances presented by children and youth from various denominations. A standout performance of the evening was a Bharatanatyam recital by Remona Pereira, a national award-winning dancer.
The event concluded with a festive dinner, offering attendees an opportunity to share in the joy of the season.
Organised by Rupesh Madtha, Prabhuraj M, Goldin J Bangera, and Dr. K V Sebastian, alongside the Ecumenical Commission of the Mangaluru Diocese, the programme showcased the spirit of collaboration and unity among Christian communities.
