Rev. Fr. Kolanjikombil Cheriyan (77) Passes Away

Rev. Fr. Kolanjikombil Cheriyan, a retired priest of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, passed away on 23rd September 2024, at the age of 77. Born on October 6, 1946, in Puliyoor, Chengannur, Fr. Cheriyan was ordained on May 5, 1973, at his home parish, Bethlehem Malankara Catholic Church, Puliyoor. His long and devoted priestly ministry spanned several parishes, including Poruvazhi, Pavumba, and Mainagapally.

Fr. Cheriyan served as Parish Priest in numerous parishes such as Thottapally, Cheruthana, and others, before moving to Pandanadu, Eramathoor, and beyond. His pastoral care extended over many communities until 2008, where his warm spirit touched many hearts. Alongside his parish duties, Fr. Cheriyan also dedicated himself to social service. He was appointed as Director of Malankara Fisheries in Thottappally from 1975 to 1983 and later served as Chaplain of Assisi Boys Home, Ala, for over two decades. Additionally, he supported the spiritual needs of St. Anne’s Convent in Chengannur from 1993 to 2019.

Throughout his ministry, Fr. Cheriyan advocated against social evils like dowry, which he saw as an oppressive practice deeply entrenched in the community. His own reflections on dowry were captured in a field study, where he expressed his concerns about the financial and moral burdens it placed on families, especially in Christian communities. He often spoke about the harsh realities families faced, especially how dowry was demanded under various guises, contributing to financial hardships and perpetuating injustice.

As a shepherd to many and a voice for the vulnerable, Rev. Fr. Kolanjikombil Cheriyan’s legacy will be remembered for his tireless service to his parishioners, his stand against societal wrongs, and his deep devotion to his faith. His loss will be profoundly felt by the Syro-Malankara Catholic community, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.

The festivities will commence with an Evangelical Evening, led by the Church’s Evangelism Committee. The Holy Qurbono (Divine Liturgy) will be celebrated, drawing the faithful closer to their spiritual roots and marking the beginning of the anniversary festivities.

Day 2: September 21, 2024 – Key Highlights

The second day will begin with the raising of the Papal and Catholicos flags, symbolising the unity of the Syro-Malankara Church with the Holy See. Following this will be the much-anticipated Global Laity Conference at 8:00 AM, inaugurated by Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, the head of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. The conference will provide a platform for the laity to come together, share ideas, and discuss ways to further contribute to the Church’s mission. Abraham M. Pattiyani, President of the Global Laity Conference, will chair the proceedings, underlining the importance of the laity in the Church’s growth and development.

The Bethany Sisters Congregation, founded by Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios in 1925, has embarked on its grand centennial celebrations, marking 100 years of dedicated service to the Church and society. The official commencement took place on September 18, 2024, at St. John’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Tiruvalla, with a solemn Holy Qurbana led by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, co-celebrated by prelates from various eparchies. The day also witnessed an inspiring message from Archbishop-elect Mar Thomas Tharayil, reflecting on the congregation’s remarkable journey over the past century.

His Beatitude Cardinal Cleemis highlighted the purpose of religious life, emphasising self-sacrifice as its ultimate goal, a central theme introduced by Mar Ivanios when he established the Bethany Sisters. The prelate spoke about the importance of dedication in all aspects of life and the role of religious communities in strengthening the Church.

The Centennial Flame Pilgrimage was another key feature of the celebration. The Bethany Sisters’ symbolic flame, representing their mission of hope, was ceremonially lit at the tomb of Archbishop Mar Ivanios in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Pattom. It was then received by Mother General Dr. Ardra S.I.C., marking the beginning of the journey that culminated at Thirumoolapuram Provincial House.

Charism and Mission of the Bethany Sisters

The Bethany Sisters Congregation, also known as the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ (SIC), was established with a profound charism rooted in the imitation of Jesus Christ, combining a life of prayer and active service. Speaking at the inauguration, His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mor Koorilos, Archbishop of Tiruvalla, described the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church as a “flower that bloomed from the spirit of Bethany,” highlighting the pivotal role that the congregation has played in the spiritual and social upliftment of the Church. Rev. Sister Mary Cruz D.M., aged 95, a cherished member of the Daughters of Mary (Nirmala Province, Venniyoor) from the 1951 batch, passed away on September 17, 2024. Her life was a testament to unwavering dedication to her religious community and a deep commitment to service.

The funeral service will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at the Nellimoodu Convent. His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mor Eusebius, Bishop of the Parassala Diocese, will be the chief celebrant for the service.

Sister Mary Cruz will be fondly remembered for her lifelong devotion and her profound contributions to the community.
