The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church has officially launched the logo for the Year of the Word of God (2024-2025), marking the beginning of a dedicated year focused on deepening the Church’s connection with Sacred Scripture. This initiative, beginning on September 21, 2024, and continuing through September 19, 2025, encourages the faithful to embrace the Word of God in all aspects of their lives, as the Church gears up for the centennial celebrations of the Reunion Movement in 2030.
This year-long celebration is not just a reminder of the importance of the Bible in personal and communal faith life but also a call for reflection, prayer, and renewed commitment to living according to the teachings of Christ. Through this initiative, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church hopes to foster a greater understanding and application of biblical teachings across its community, with various spiritual programmes and activities being planned for every level of the faithful, from families to parishes.
Logo Unveiling and Its Deep Symbolism
At the heart of the logo is an open Bible with the image of Christ emerging from its pages, highlighting our profound belief that Christ is the living Word. This visual reinforces the truth that Sacred Scripture is not just text, but a living encounter with the person of Christ, guiding us in our faith. The Bible is illuminated by a divine light, symbolising the heavenly wisdom and truth that emanate from God’s Word. As believers, we are called to live in this light and let it transform our lives.
Hovering above the Bible is a dove, a timeless symbol of the Holy Spirit, whose guidance is essential in understanding and living out the Scriptures. This imagery connects with our own experience as Malankara Catholics, reminding us that the Holy Spirit is always present, helping us to grasp the true meaning of God’s Word and leading us to apply it in our daily challenges and joys.
The background of the logo, filled with the warm hues of an orange sky, evokes a sense of new beginnings and spiritual awakening. The image reminds us that as we immerse ourselves in the Word of God, we are brought closer to both the heavens and the world around us. The Church, through its teachings, stands as a mediator, helping us encounter the divine through Scripture and leading us to live it out in tangible ways.
Text and Central Message
The surrounding text in the logo, written in Malayalam, reflects our proud cultural and spiritual heritage. The phrase “Vachanavarthanam 2024-2025” (Year of the Word of God 2024-2025) is prominently placed, boldly declaring the focus of the year.
Below the logo, the words “Kurishil Vachanthil Vasikkuka” (Living in the Cross and the Word) carry a powerful message for every believer. It calls us to integrate the Word of God into our daily lives and to live it out with the same faithfulness that Christ showed on the Cross. This message invites us not just to read the Bible, but to embody it, living its truths in all aspects of life. Additionally, the inscription “Punnareekku Shathabhdi Aghosham 2030” refers to the upcoming centenary celebrations of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church’s reunion with the Catholic Church, reminding us of the historical journey of our Church and its unwavering commitment to the Word of God.
Expanded Initiatives: Parish and Family-Level Celebrations
As part of this year’s celebrations, the Church has also organised parish-level Word of God inaugurations across all parishes on September 29, 2024, following the official Church-wide inauguration by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos. This event took place at Parassala Mar Ivanios Nagar (VPS Malankara HSS, Venganoor) on September 21, 2024, marking the 94th anniversary of the Reunion Movement.
On September 29, 2024, every parish of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church was entrusted to celebrate the inauguration of the Year of the Word of God during the Holy Qurbono. This parish-level celebration was designed to involve the faithful at the grassroots, ensuring that the Year of the Word reaches every corner of the Church.
In addition, family-level celebrations were launched the same evening with the enthronement of the Word of God during family prayers at 7:00 PM, reinforcing the message that Scripture should be central not only in Church life but also in every home. Families were invited to enthrone the Holy Bible in their homes, symbolising the importance of living in the Word of God within the family setting.
A Year of Scriptural Engagement and Renewal
The Year of the Word of God aims to make the Bible more accessible and relevant to all members of the Church. Through the upcoming months, various spiritual programmes and events will be organised to deepen the faithful’s engagement with Scripture. Among the highlighted activities are:
Bible Reading and Reflection Initiatives: Regular Bible reading sessions will be conducted in families, parishes, and small groups to promote Lectio Divina (prayerful reading of Scripture). The Church encourages all families to come together for daily reading of the Word, fostering a prayerful environment where the teachings of Christ are discussed and lived out.
Scripture-Based Retreats and Catechesis: Special retreats and catechetical programmes are being designed to focus on key biblical themes, such as discipleship, faith, love, and sacrifice. These sessions will provide opportunities for deeper reflection on how the Word of God can inspire and shape personal and communal lives.
Children and Youth Programmes: Recognising the importance of Scripture in shaping the younger generation, the Church is planning Bible-related activities for children and youth. These include scripture quizzes, Bible-themed art competitions, and study groups, aimed at fostering a lifelong relationship with the Word among young people.
Scripture in Liturgy and Prayer: The liturgical celebrations throughout this year will have a heightened focus on the Scriptures. From special Bible enthronements during Holy Qurbono to increased emphasis on Scriptural readings during homilies and prayers, the Church seeks to weave the Word more integrally into its liturgical life.
Online Bible Apostolate and Resources: With the growing role of technology in evangelisation, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church will offer digital resources for Bible study, prayers, and reflection. These materials, accessible through the Church’s online platforms, will help the faithful engage with Scripture even in their busy lives.
The Broader Context: Celebrating Our Reunion Journey
This initiative is not happening in isolation. The Year of the Word of God serves as a preparation for the grand centennial celebrations of our Church’s reunion with the Catholic Church in 2030. As we approach this milestone, the Church is focusing on deepening its spiritual foundation, with the Bible serving as the cornerstone of this journey.
The Church’s leadership, spearheaded by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, aims to ensure that the upcoming centenary is not just a moment of reflection on the past, but a launching point for new spiritual growth, rooted in the Word of God. The Church encourages every Malankara Catholic to take this year as a time of personal renewal, diving deeper into the Scriptures and allowing them to guide both individual and communal life.
Conclusion: A Call to Live the Word
The unveiling of the Year of the Word of God logo and the subsequent celebrations at both parish and family levels represent significant moments for the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. This is not just a visual representation or a series of events, but a profound reminder and invitation for each of us to immerse ourselves more fully in the Word of God.
As we journey together towards the centenary of our reunion with the Catholic Church, let us be guided by the Scriptures, allowing them to transform our hearts and minds. This Year of the Word of God is a time to live out the teachings of the Bible in our homes, parishes, and communities, strengthening our faith and devotion as we prepare for this important milestone in our Church’s history.
On September 28th, 2024, the Syro-Malankara Catholic community in the United Kingdom embarked on their annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham, a place steeped in both English and Christian heritage. This year’s pilgrimage was particularly special as it marked the 94th Reunion Anniversary celebrations of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. Over 700 faithful participated in the pilgrimage led by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mor Koorilos, the Secretary of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Synod and Metropolitan Archbishop of Tiruvalla, who graced the pilgrimage with his spiritual leadership and celebrated a solemn Holy Qurbono (Mass).
The village of Walsingham, often referred to as “England’s Nazareth,” is home to the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham, which has been a destination for Christian pilgrims for centuries. Walsingham’s spiritual significance dates back to 1061, when Lady Richeldis de Faverches had a vision of the Virgin Mary, instructing her to build a replica of the Holy House of Nazareth. Since then, the shrine has been a beacon of Marian devotion, attracting pilgrims from all over the world. The basilica, part of the Roman Catholic National Shrine, continues to be a place of deep prayer, reflection, and miracles.
The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, deeply rooted in the West Syriac Rite, places a special emphasis on devotion to the Mother of God, making this annual pilgrimage particularly meaningful. The faithful gathered at 10:30 AM at the Walsingham Annunciation Churchyard, where the event commenced with an opening prayer. The day’s events were organised under the careful direction of Fr. Kuriakose Thadathil, UK Special Pastor and Coordinator, who extended a warm invitation to all faithful to join in the pilgrimage.
Following the prayer, a Rosary procession led the pilgrims to the Basilica, where they prayed in honour of Our Lady of Walsingham. The afternoon featured a con-celebrated Holy Qurbono at 2:00 PM, presided over by His Grace Mor Koorilos. Lunch was served at 12:30 PM, allowing the participants to come together in fellowship. The day’s events concluded with the pilgrims reflecting on the enduring message of Marian devotion, a common thread that unites Christians from across the world.
This year’s pilgrimage also benefited from the organisational efforts of several committees. Ronnie Jacob, the National Council General Secretary, noted that these committees worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage concluded at 5:00 PM, as the faithful departed with renewed spirits, strengthened by the prayers and reflections offered in the sacred space of Walsingham.
For the Syro-Malankara Catholic community, this pilgrimage represents a spiritual journey that ties together their Eastern traditions with the rich Western heritage of Walsingham. As they gathered in prayer at the Basilica, the pilgrims were reminded of Pope Leo XIII’s prophecy, “When England returns to Walsingham, Our Lady will return to England.” This pilgrimage is a significant reminder of the role that the Virgin Mary plays in uniting Christians across rites and cultures.
The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Walsingham is not just a local event but part of a greater movement of Christian devotion. For the Syro-Malankara Catholic community, it underscores their commitment to nurturing their faith and tradition while engaging with the wider Christian world. The Basilica, with its rich history of pilgrimage, and Walsingham’s deep Marian heritage, offer the perfect environment for this blending of traditions, deepening their spiritual connection to both their Eastern roots and the universal Church.
The pilgrimage continues to be a pivotal event for the Syro-Malankara community in the UK, celebrating their faith, unity, and Marian devotion, ensuring that this annual event remains a key spiritual journey for generations to come.

The bishops also looked ahead to the Jubilee Year of Hope in 2025 and the second session of the Synod on Synodality in Rome.
Key Topics of Discussion
1. Migrants and Refugees: The Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace led an important discussion on the global and local challenges faced by migrants and refugees. The session featured insights from Fr. Fabio Baggio, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and Ms. Alessandra Santopadre from the Archdiocese of Montreal. The discussion centered on the Church’s role in advocating for the rights and dignity of displaced individuals, a topic close to Bishop Mor Stephanos, given his pastoral involvement in immigrant communities.
2. Development and Peace—Caritas Canada (DPCC): An update on the activities of Development and Peace—Caritas Canada was presented by DPCC’s National Council members, including Mrs. Brenda Arakaza, President, and Mr. Carl Hétu, Executive Director. The session focused on Caritas Canada’s efforts in addressing poverty and injustice through development projects, aligning with Pope Francis’s call for a “Church of the poor.” The organization highlighted its work in various global regions, where it supports vulnerable communities.
3. Safeguarding Minors and Vulnerable Persons: The Standing Committee for Responsible Ministry and the Protection of Minors and Vulnerable Persons presented new measures to review and enhance safeguarding protocols within dioceses and parishes. The Committee urged the bishops to continue their commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that the Church remains a safe space for all, especially minors and vulnerable groups.
4. Synod on Synodality: As the Church prepares for the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, synodality was a central theme of the Plenary Assembly. The bishops participated in small group discussions to reflect on the Canadian Church’s synodal journey, providing feedback to the Synod’s General Secretariat. Bishop Mor Stephanos, in his role as a delegate, contributed to these discussions, particularly focusing on the unique challenges faced by Eastern Catholic Churches in Canada.
The Synod process has been a collaborative effort to understand how the Church can better walk together as a synodal community. The bishops reviewed the local synodal experiences and explored how these insights could enrich the universal Church’s ongoing synodal reflections. His Eminence Mario Cardinal Grech, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, delivered a keynote address virtually, discussing the second session of the Synod scheduled in Rome.
Additional Highlights:
350th Anniversary of Quebec’s Archdiocese: This year’s Plenary Assembly coincided with the 350th anniversary of the establishment of the Archdiocese of Quebec. The bishops joined Cardinal Archbishop Gerald Lacroix in celebrating this historic milestone, which underscores the deep roots of Catholicism in North America.
Address by the Apostolic Nuncio: As per tradition, Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič, Apostolic Nuncio to Canada, addressed the assembly. His remarks echoed Pope Francis’s vision of a Church that is both outward-looking and grounded in social justice, with particular emphasis on the importance of walking alongside migrants, Indigenous peoples, and the marginalised.
Jubilee Year of Hope 2025: Looking forward, the assembly discussed preparations for the Jubilee Year of Hope in 2025. This year, focused on prayer and reflection, will commemorate key moments in the Church’s history and promote a renewed sense of evangelization. The bishops reviewed initiatives led by the Ad-hoc Committee for the Jubilee, including a webinar series on the Vatican II Constitutions and the spiritual significance of the Our Father.
Family and Life – Euthanasia and Palliative Care: The bishops addressed Canada’s ongoing debate over euthanasia and assisted suicide. The CCCB emphasized the importance of expanding palliative care services and strengthening advocacy against euthanasia. In collaboration with the Pontifical Academy for Life, the CCCB hosted an international symposium titled Towards a Narrative of Hope, focusing on palliative care and the need for a culture of compassion.
Indigenous Reconciliation Efforts: The bishops reflected on the second anniversary of Pope Francis’s penitential pilgrimage to Canada and the ongoing work of healing and reconciliation with Indigenous communities. Significant progress has been made through the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund, which supports initiatives aimed at fostering justice and healing. The CCCB continues to engage in dialogue with Indigenous leaders and other Catholic episcopal conferences to address common concerns.
Press Briefings and Synod Delegates:
The assembly included multiple press briefings, both formal and informal, to discuss the proceedings. Bishop Mor Stephanos, along with other delegates, participated in discussions about Canada’s contribution to the Synod of Bishops, with particular attention to the needs of the Eastern Catholic communities.
Conclusion: A Call for Unity and Evangelization
As the Plenary Assembly drew to a close, the bishops reaffirmed their commitment to building a Church that walks with the marginalised, safeguards the vulnerable, and stands united in faith. For Bishop Philipos Mor Stephanos, the gathering was an opportunity to represent the concerns of the Syro-Malankara Catholic faithful in Canada and to contribute to the broader discussion on synodality, migration, and evangelization.
This assembly not only set the stage for the Canadian Church’s participation in the Synod on Synodality but also provided a platform for the bishops to reaffirm their mission in a world facing both spiritual and social challenges.
