The Bethany Sisters Congregation, founded by Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios in 1925, has embarked on its grand centennial celebrations, marking 100 years of dedicated service to the Church and society. The official commencement took place on September 18, 2024, at St. John’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Tiruvalla, with a solemn Holy Qurbana led by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, co-celebrated by prelates from various eparchies. The day also witnessed an inspiring message from Archbishop-elect Mar Thomas Tharayil, reflecting on the congregation’s remarkable journey over the past century.
His Beatitude Cardinal Cleemis highlighted the purpose of religious life, emphasising self-sacrifice as its ultimate goal, a central theme introduced by Mar Ivanios when he established the Bethany Sisters. The prelate spoke about the importance of dedication in all aspects of life and the role of religious communities in strengthening the Church.
The Centennial Flame Pilgrimage was another key feature of the celebration. The Bethany Sisters’ symbolic flame, representing their mission of hope, was ceremonially lit at the tomb of Archbishop Mar Ivanios in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Pattom. It was then received by Mother General Dr. Ardra S.I.C., marking the beginning of the journey that culminated at Thirumoolapuram Provincial House.
Charism and Mission of the Bethany Sisters
The Bethany Sisters Congregation, also known as the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ (SIC), was established with a profound charism rooted in the imitation of Jesus Christ, combining a life of prayer and active service. Inspired by Oriental Christian and Indian monastic traditions, the sisters have committed themselves to the proclamation of the Word of God, spiritual revival, and evangelization, while focusing on the empowerment of women. Their motto—Prayer, Simplicity, Love, and Service—has been the cornerstone of their mission.
Speaking at the inauguration, His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mor Koorilos, Archbishop of Tiruvalla, described the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church as a “flower that bloomed from the spirit of Bethany,” highlighting the pivotal role that the congregation has played in the spiritual and social upliftment of the Church. The sisters have left an indelible mark on the Malankara Church, guiding the faithful in their journey of spiritual renewal.
The Mother General of the Bethany Sisters, Dr. Ardra S.I.C., who also serves as the President of the Kerala Conference of Major Superiors, presided over the centennial opening ceremony, underscoring the congregation’s continued commitment to carrying forward the vision of Mar Ivanios. The celebration choir featured 100 Bethany Sisters, performing hymns that marked this historic occasion. Students from St. Theresa’s High School, Chengaroor also performed a prayer dance.
Global Presence and Outreach
Embodying the call of Jesus Christ to “go into all the world and proclaim the good news,” the Bethany Sisters have spread their influence far beyond Kerala. Their global presence spans diverse regions, continuing to serve the needy, uphold the dignity of life, and empower women. Their contributions to education, healthcare, and other apostolic activities have been instrumental in spiritual renewal, with a focus on fostering unity and holistic development within the communities they serve.
At the inaugural event, Bishop Dr. Joshua Mor Ignathios, Bishop of Mavelikara, Bishop Dr. Antony Mor Silvanos, and Bishop Dr. Samuel Mor Irenios, among others, spoke on the vital importance of the Bethany Sisters’ work over the past century. Most Rev. Dr. Selvester Ponnumuthan, Bishop of Punalur, inaugurated various centenary projects, while Bishop Dr. Yoohanon Mor Theodosius launched a commemorative book.
The centennial logo was also unveiled during the ceremony by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mor Koorilos, marking the year-long celebrations. Bishop Emeritus Dr. Abraham Mor Julios received the first copy of the centennial book from Most Rev. Dr. Yoohanon Mor Theodosius, underscoring the spiritual significance of the celebration.
Looking Ahead: The Path to 2025
The centennial celebrations will continue throughout the year, with the culmination set for July 2025 in Nalanchira, Trivandrum. The congregation remains committed to advancing the legacy of Mar Ivanios, serving the Church with a renewed spirit of prayer, simplicity, love, and service. As the centennial flame continues its journey, the Bethany Sisters are poised to deepen their redemptive work, inspiring generations to come.
