The Malankara Syrian Catholic Church’s Synod Commission for Social Service Activities held a meeting on December 1, 2023, at the Pattom Catholic Center. Archbishop His Grace Antony Mar Silvanos Episcopos inaugurated the meeting, and Rev. Fr. George Vettikatt, Secretary of the Synod Commission, delivered the welcome address. Social worker Sri. M.T. Varghese led a session on the relevance of social service activities. Directors of the social service departments from various dioceses, along with representatives from different congregations, actively participated in the meeting.
The meeting focused on discussions about the importance of social service activities and ways to address the needs of various sections of society. Commission members emphasized the need for increased participation of church members in social work initiatives.
As part of the meeting, new plans and programs for social service activities were launched. These include projects providing food, clothing, and shelter for the poor and disabled, as well as initiatives promoting education and healthcare.
Commission members reiterated the church’s commitment to creating positive changes in society through social service activities.
The Relevance of Social Service Activities
In his session, Sri. M.T. Varghese explored the relevance of social service. He stressed the importance of ensuring that everyone in society lives with complete happiness and prosperity, which can be achieved through active social service engagement.
Varghese further emphasized that social work helps reduce inequality and promote unity within society. By actively engaging in social work, individuals can empower the underprivileged and fight for their rights to a better life.
