Significance of the Ethiopian Cross

The Ethiopian Cross is renowned for its intricate design and historical significance. It symbolizes the unity and faith of the Christian community in Ethiopia. This cross, distinct for its interwoven lattice style, represents eternal life and the interconnectedness of humanity. Historically, the Ethiopian Cross has been presented to individuals and organizations that have made remarkable contributions to the Christian faith and humanitarian efforts.

Acknowledgment of Missionary Efforts

In a brief exchange, Pope Francis expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the tireless efforts of the Bethany Congregation members in Ethiopia. The Bethanians have been instrumental in evangelizing, promoting education, healthcare, and social welfare in some of the most underserved regions of the country. Their compassionate work has significantly uplifted local communities, providing hope and support to countless individuals.

The Order of the Imitation of Christ

Founded by Fr. P.T. Geevarghese Panickaruveettiil OIC (later Archbishop Mar Ivanios) on August 15, 1919, the Order of the Imitation of Christ, also known as the Bethany Congregation, integrates the monastic ideals of the Christian East with Indian Sannyasam. Known for its austere lifestyle, intense prayer, and commitment to apostolic activities, the Bethany Ashram became a pivotal center for the Reunion Movement with the Catholic Church in 1930 and achieved Pontifical status in 1966.

Broader Impact of Missionary Work

The Holy Father’s acknowledgment not only highlighted the specific contributions of the Bethanians but also underscored the broader impact of missionary work in fostering global solidarity and spiritual growth. This blessing serves as a testament to the enduring commitment of the Bethany Congregation to serve humanity with compassion and faith.

Dedication to Service

Superior General Fr. Geevarghese Kuttiyil OIC dedicated this honour to all members of the Bethany Religious Congregation who have worked selflessly in Ethiopia. He emphasized that this recognition is a collective achievement, reflecting the hard work, dedication, and faith of every Bethanian. The congregation’s efforts in Ethiopia have been pivotal in evangelizing, promoting education, healthcare, and social welfare, significantly uplifting local communities.

The recognition of the Bethany Congregation by Pope Francis is a profound affirmation of their mission and service. It encourages continued dedication and highlights the importance of their work in Ethiopia and beyond. The Ethiopian Cross bestowed upon them is not only a symbol of their achievements but also a call to further their mission of compassion and service in the global community.
