In a city where the sands of Kuwait stretch beneath a bright sky, a remarkable legacy quietly flourishes, nurtured by faith, culture, and unity. For the Kuwait Malankara Rite Movement (KMRM), what began as a modest gathering of Malankara Catholic families in 1994 has blossomed into a steadfast community with over 500 families. Now, as KMRM marks its thirty-year Pearl Jubilee, the organization stands as a testament to the strength of tradition, spiritual unity, and cultural pride.
On November 1, 2024, this momentous journey culminated in “Vilavolsavam 2024,” a grand event held at Jaleeb Al Shoukh United International Indian School. Dr. Kanjiramukalil’s father, present to witness this heartwarming tradition, shared in this moment, which underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
Gratitude and Farewell
As the vibrant energy of Vilavolsavam gradually softened into a reflective stillness, KMRM Treasurer Rana Varghese took to the stage for a heartfelt vote of thanks. The moment captured the essence of the day, an expression of gratitude that resonated with every person present, from long-serving members to young children who had just begun their own journey in the faith. Rana’s words underscored not only the efforts behind organizing this magnificent Pearl Jubilee but also the collective spirit that has sustained KMRM through three transformative decades.
As the crowd lingered, reluctant to let the day’s warmth slip away, there was a shared understanding that this was more than a celebration—it was a renewal of purpose. The gathering was a reminder of the journey KMRM had undertaken, from a small meeting of faith-driven families in 1994 to a robust community of 500 families committed to cultural, spiritual, and social enrichment. This Pearl Jubilee was not just a commemoration of the past; it was an affirmation of what lies ahead. Each generation—new and old—had renewed their commitment to carrying forward the torch of the Malankara Catholic faith.
In the soft light of that November evening, KMRM’s legacy felt tangible, like a thread connecting all those gathered to each other and to the countless souls who had been part of this journey over the years. The Jubilee may have drawn to a close, but the spirit it celebrated lived on, woven into the fabric of the community. It was a promise to honour the past, engage with the present, and move confidently into the future, guided by faith, unity, and a deep-rooted commitment to the values that define the Malankara Catholic tradition.
As the crowd began to disperse, there was a renewed sense of purpose and pride—a quiet understanding that KMRM’s next chapter would be written with the same dedication, spirit, and community strength that had brought them this far. And so, with smiles and farewells, the families of KMRM carried forward the legacy of Vilavolsavam and thirty years of faith, leaving an indelible mark on both Kuwait and the lives of all who call it home.
This Pearl Jubilee wasn’t just an event—it was a landmark, a celebration of resilience, unity, and enduring faith. It was a promise that KMRM would continue to grow, inspire, and serve, as it had for the last three decades, embracing the future with the same unwavering spirit that has defined its past.

The Malankara Jacobite Syrian Christian community mourns the passing of its esteemed leader, Catholicos Aboon Mor Baselios Thomas I, who departed this life on 31 October 2024 at the age of 95. Known for his resilience, humility, and profound faith, Catholicos Thomas I’s life was a testament to selfless service and spiritual fortitude.
Born on 22 July 1929 in Vadayambadi, Puthencruz, Catholicos Thomas I, originally named C M Thomas, faced early hardships. Despite being born into an aristocratic family, his household experienced significant economic challenges during his youth, which, along with recurring illnesses, impacted his education. However, his mother’s fervent prayers and unshakeable faith ultimately inspired her to dedicate him to a life of service to the Church—a decision that would shape his journey profoundly.
Path to Priesthood and Spiritual Leadership
Guided from an early age by revered mentors in the faith, including Mor Philoxenos Paulose (later Catholicos Mor Baselios Paulose II), young Thomas found a path that combined spiritual growth with unwavering dedication to his community. In 1952, he was ordained as ‘Korooyo’ (sub-deacon), and by 1958, he took up the role of ‘Kassisso’ (full priest) under Mor Yulius Elias. This marked the beginning of a ministry characterised by devotion and compassion.
Throughout his clerical life, Catholicos Thomas I served various parishes, notably in St. Peter’s Church in Puthencruz, Vellathooval, Keezhumuri, and Fort Kochi. He worked tirelessly, often joining labourers in the physical renovation of these churches, an act that illustrated his humble and approachable nature. His work expanded beyond parish boundaries, as he played a key role in establishing hospitals, missions, and community welfare programmes, such as the Mor Baselios Medical Mission Hospital in Kothamangalam.
Defender of Faith Amidst Challenges
The 1970s and 80s brought significant challenges for the Jacobite Syrian Christian community, with legal and social disputes threatening the Church’s cohesion. Undeterred, Catholicos Thomas I, then Metropolitan Mor Dionysius, alongside Metropolitans Mor Geevarghese Gregorios and Mor Koorilos Kuriakose, provided steadfast leadership, visiting congregations across regions to fortify their spirits and remind them of the enduring strength of faith.
In 2002, Mor Dionysius was consecrated as Catholicos with the title Baselios Thomas I by the Patriarch of Antioch, His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, at St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Cathedral in Mor Ephrem Monastery, near Damascus. His consecration was a historic moment, restoring the role of Catholicos to the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church after a six-year hiatus. As Catholicos, he served as the second-highest leader in the global Syrian Orthodox Church, second only to the Patriarch of Antioch.
Under his spiritual guidance, the Church grew in both strength and unity. Catholicos Thomas I was instrumental in ordaining approximately 350 priests and supporting the establishment of various educational institutions, hospitals, and other community projects. His compassionate leadership during times of persecution saw him stand with his people, enduring personal arrests and becoming an accused in hundreds of cases to uphold the rights and dignity of his community.
A Life Marked by Prayer, Compassion, and Dedication
Known for his compassion, Catholicos Thomas I was a humble and approachable leader whose sermons resonated deeply with the faithful. His dedication to community welfare was unwavering, whether in supporting coal mine workers, caring for tuberculosis patients at Varikoli Hospital, or advocating for cemetery access for his people.
