With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Rev. Sr. Benjamin SIC, a beloved member of the Bethany Sisters of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and former Superior General of the congregation. Sr. Benjamin, aged 77, entered eternal rest on 1 December 2024, leaving behind a life of faithful service to the Church and community, particularly in Delhi, where she ministered for many years.

A Life Dedicated to Service and Faith

Rev. Sr. Benjamin was born on 15 August 1946, a date that marked the beginning of a life committed to love, service, and faith. Her spiritual journey began with her First Profession on 3 May 1966, and she sealed her dedication to the Lord with her Final Profession on 13 May 1972.

Sr. Benjamin was deeply committed to her religious calling, living a life of devotion and humility. She was the sister of Rev. Fr. Jose Mariadas OIC, a cherished priest of the Bethany Congregation, and Sr. Keerthana, Sr. Little Therese, and Sr. Gloria, who are also dedicated members of the Bethany Sisters. Her journey of faith and dedication inspired countless individuals, as she exemplified the Bethany Congregation’s charism through her ministry and leadership.

Funeral Details

The final rites for Sr. Benjamin SIC took place on Monday, 2 December 2024, as follows:

  • 7:00 AM: Removal of the mortal remains from the mortuary.
  • 7:30 AM: Arrival at Bethania Convent.
  • 8:00 AM: Stop at Thirumoolapuram Convent for homage.
  • 10:00 AM: Solemn Holy Qurbono (Divine Liturgy).
  • 3:00 PM: Burial Service.

Funeral Updates

The day began with a solemn visit by His Eminent Beatitude Cardinal Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, who arrived at Pushpagiri Mortuary to offer prayers and incense for Sr. Benjamin’s repose. This gesture of pastoral care and love marked the beginning of the day’s funeral proceedings.

They were joined by Rev. Fr. Jose Mariadas OIC, Sr. Benjamin’s brother, who led the liturgical service as the principal celebrant. The Holy Qurbono and burial service were a profound reflection of Sr. Benjamin’s life of faith, attended by clergy, Bethany Sisters, family members, and the faithful.

The event began with an enlightening session led by Fr. Dr. Jolly Karimpil, a professor from the Major Seminary. Fr. Karimpil addressed the pressing faith-related questions and doubts faced by the youth in today’s world. His responses were both inspiring and thought-provoking, fostering a deeper understanding of faith among the young participants.

The meeting was presided over by His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Mathews Mor Polycarpos, Auxiliary Bishop of the Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum and Chairperson of the Youth Commission. The Evangelization Apostolate of the Pathanamthitta Diocese is spearheading a series of EnChristo Teens Gatherings aimed at fostering the spiritual growth of teenagers in classes 8 to 12 across various parishes. These gatherings serve as a platform for young members of the Church to strengthen their faith and build a deeper connection with Christ.

On Sunday, 24th November 2024, the EnChristo Teens Gathering for the Ranni-Perunad Ecclesiastical District was held at the St. Mary’s Malankara Catholic Church, Mylapra. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation, with over 200 attendees, including students, teachers, and programme leaders.

The gathering featured a range of activities designed to inspire, educate, and spiritually enrich the teenagers. Sessions included interactive faith-building exercises, thought-provoking discussions, and opportunities for communal worship, all rooted in the teachings of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church.

The programme was organised under the able guidance of the Parish Vicar, Rev. Fr. Paul Nilackal Thekethil, who provided leadership and support to ensure the event’s success. The efforts of the parish community, teachers, and volunteers were instrumental in creating an enriching and memorable experience for the participants.

These gatherings highlight the Church’s commitment to nurturing the faith of its young members, ensuring they grow into spiritually grounded individuals ready to contribute to the community. A free mega medical camp was successfully conducted at the Veegees Auditorium, Almaav Kavala, Pullad, under the joint sponsorship of the Karunya Health Foundation Pullad Zonal Committee, Pushpagiri Medical College Hospital, and the Joy Alukkas Foundation. This event showcased the collective efforts of community organisations and healthcare institutions in providing accessible medical care to the public.

The camp was inaugurated by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mor Koorilos, the Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Archdiocese of Tiruvalla. His Grace highlighted the importance of community-driven initiatives in ensuring healthcare access for all. Mr. C.S. Manoj presided over the event, and Zonal Secretary Mr. Jiju Samuel extended a warm welcome to the attendees.

Awareness Session on Stroke

The camp featured an enlightening awareness session on strokes, led by Dr. S. Vijayalakshmi, who emphasised the importance of early detection and management. Her insights were well-received by the audience, fostering greater awareness about this critical health issue.

In addition to consultations, free thyroid testing was conducted, ensuring participants had access to essential diagnostics. The distribution of dialysis kits to those in need further highlighted the camp’s focus on addressing critical health concerns.

Free Medicines and Eyewear Distribution

Medicines were provided free of charge to all patients, courtesy of the Joy Alukkas Foundation. Moreover, 120 individuals eligible for prescription glasses will receive their eyewear at no cost, ensuring continued support beyond the camp.

This initiative has been hailed as a significant step in community healthcare, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the organisations involved. Through such efforts, the Karunya Health Foundation and its partners continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless individuals.
