With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Rev. Sr. Benjamin SIC, a beloved member of the Bethany Sisters of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and former Superior General of the congregation. Sr. Benjamin, aged 77, entered eternal rest on 1 December 2024, leaving behind a life of faithful service to the Church and community, particularly in Delhi, where she ministered for many years.
A Life Dedicated to Service and Faith
Rev. Sr. Benjamin was born on 15 August 1946, a date that marked the beginning of a life committed to love, service, and faith. Her spiritual journey began with her First Profession on 3 May 1966, and she sealed her dedication to the Lord with her Final Profession on 13 May 1972.
Sr. Benjamin was deeply committed to her religious calling, living a life of devotion and humility. She was the sister of Rev. Fr. Jose Mariadas OIC, a cherished priest of the Bethany Congregation, and Sr. Keerthana, Sr. Little Therese, and Sr. Gloria, who are also dedicated members of the Bethany Sisters. Her journey of faith and dedication inspired countless individuals, as she exemplified the Bethany Congregation’s charism through her ministry and leadership.
Funeral Details
The final rites for Sr. Benjamin SIC took place on Monday, 2 December 2024, as follows:
- 7:00 AM: Removal of the mortal remains from the mortuary.
- 7:30 AM: Arrival at Bethania Convent.
- 8:00 AM: Stop at Thirumoolapuram Convent for homage.
- 10:00 AM: Solemn Holy Qurbono (Divine Liturgy).
- 3:00 PM: Burial Service.
Funeral Updates
The day began with a solemn visit by His Eminent Beatitude Cardinal Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, who arrived at Pushpagiri Mortuary to offer prayers and incense for Sr. Benjamin’s repose. This gesture of pastoral care and love marked the beginning of the day’s funeral proceedings.
The funeral was presided over by three bishops:
- His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Archieparchy of Tiruvalla.
- His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios, Bishop of Pathanamthitta.
- His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Pachomios, Bishop of Khadki – Pune.
They were joined by Rev. Fr. Jose Mariadas OIC, Sr. Benjamin’s brother, who led the liturgical service as the principal celebrant. The Holy Qurbono and burial service were a profound reflection of Sr. Benjamin’s life of faith, attended by clergy, Bethany Sisters, family members, and the faithful.
