A Luminous Conclusion to the 15-Day Commemoration of Venerable Archbishop Mar Ivanios: Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher Celebrates Holy Qurbono in Trivandrum

Date:

The Syro Malankara Catholic Church reached the culminating moment of its profound 15-day commemoration on 15 July 2025, marking the 72nd Memorial Feast and the centennial anniversary of the episcopal consecration of its venerable founder, Archbishop Mar Ivanios. This centenary year has been a journey of prayer, reflection, and renewal—a sacred pilgrimage retracing the footsteps of a man whose vision continues to illumine the path of the Church.

The day prior, as twilight embraced the city of Trivandrum, thousands gathered in solemn unity for the closing act of the pilgrimage walk that had traversed parishes and hearts alike. With candles flickering like tiny beacons of hope and faith, the faithful processed towards St. Mary’s Major Archiepiscopal Cathedral, their collective light weaving a tapestry of reverence under the night sky. Among them stood His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, shoulder to shoulder with the bishops of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church, their joined candlelight a silent but powerful testimony to the unity Archbishop Mar Ivanios so fervently championed.

The pilgrimage walk and candlelight procession were not merely acts of devotion but a vivid reminder of the enduring legacy of Mar Ivanios, who, a hundred years ago, was consecrated bishop—an event that sparked the renewal and reunion of the Malankara Church. The night’s gentle illumination carried the prayers and hopes of a people who continue to draw strength from their spiritual father’s call to holiness and unity.

On the fifteenth and final day of the commemoration, the faithful gathered once more within the hallowed walls of the Major Archiepiscopal Cathedral to celebrate the Holy Qurbono, presided over by Archbishop Gallagher himself. In his homily, the Archbishop unfolded the rich tapestry of Mar Ivanios’ life and mission: a visionary far beyond his time, a servant of God who embodied the Gospel’s call to unity, holiness, and selfless service.

Archbishop Gallagher’s words resonated with the assembled faithful as he spoke of Mar Ivanios’ commitment to holistic education—nurturing mind, body, heart, and soul—and his courageous advocacy for women’s education during an era when such foresight was scarce. He reminded all present that the unity Mar Ivanios espoused is drawn from the Gospel’s heart, not imposed by force, but blossoming from prayer, humility, and dialogue.

The Archbishop also exhorted the faithful to embrace the living legacy of Mar Ivanios, which calls each of us to cultivate a personal relationship with Christ, to seek holiness in daily life, and to serve others with compassion and generosity. “May Christ, the Good Shepherd,” he prayed, “grant us the grace to be faithful disciples, courageous leaders, and compassionate servants, building a Church and a world where unity, peace, and love reign.”

The celebration was graced by His Eminent Beatitude Cardinal Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, alongside the venerable episcopate, clergy, religious, and the faithful—united in honouring the centenary of a man whose light continues to guide the Church.

As the candles were extinguished and the faithful dispersed, the glow lingered—not merely as a memory of light but as a living flame in the hearts of the faithful, a testament to a century of faithfulness and a beacon for the future. The centennial of Archbishop Mar Ivanios’ episcopal ordination stands not as a conclusion but as an invitation—to live out his vision with renewed zeal and to walk forward in unity and grace.
