Statement
The Apostolic Nunciature (Holy See Embassy) informs that today, 11 February 2013, the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI communicated his decision to renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, Head of the Catholic Church and of the Vatican City State, in such a way that as from 28 February 2013, at 20.00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff of the catholic Church will have to be convoked by those who have the competence to do it in accordance with the Canon Law.
The Director of the Press Office of the Holy See. Fr. Federico Lombardi SJ, gave a briefing to journalists in the Press Office of the Holy See at 12:30 PM today, during which he clarified the following points:
- Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation on Monday morning, effective February 28th, 2013 at 8 PM Rome Time.
- Pope Benedict XVI has given his resignation freely, in accordance with Canon 332 s2 of the Code of Canon Law
- Pope Benedict XVI will not take part in the Conclave for the election of his successor. Pope Benedict XVI will move to the Papal residence in Castel Gandolfo when his resignation shall become effective.
- When renovation work on the monastery of cloistered nuns inside the Vatican is complete, the Holy Father will move there for a period of prayer and reflection.
