In a groundbreaking project personally sanctioned by His Holiness Pope Francis, the Bethany Congregation has made remarkable strides in uplifting a marginalized tribal community in Ethiopia. The project has already seen over 300 baptisms and the construction of a new chapel, symbolising new hope and spiritual renewal for this once ostracised community.
The newly constructed road, an essential part of the project, was recently inaugurated by Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel CM, President of the Ethiopian Episcopal Conference. The inauguration was attended by prominent church leaders, including His Excellency Bishop Muse Gabreghiorgis OFM Cap., Bishop of the Emdibir Eparchy, Rev. Msgr. Massimo Catterin, Deputy Head of Missions – Ethiopian Apostolic Nunciature, and Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Kuttiyil OIC, Superior General of the Bethany Congregation. Also present were Rev. Fr. Augustine Kavungal OIC, and several priests and religious from Bethany Gedam, Ethiopia, along with hundreds of local residents.
Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Kuttiyil OIC expressed profound gratitude to His Holiness Pope Francis for the support and recognition of their mission. He highlighted that this project marks a pivotal moment in the Congregation’s efforts to serve the region, and assured that their mission to bring integral development to the Ethiopian community will continue with renewed vigour.
