Koinonia 2025 Concludes in Miami with a Profound Expression of Communion and Priesthood

Date:

Koinonia 2025, the gathering of Malayalam Catholic priests serving across the United States, came to a graceful close in Miami. Organised as part of the Silver Jubilee commemorations of the St Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, the event marked an uplifting chapter in the spiritual life of the wider Indian Catholic community in America.

Held on 18 and 19 November at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Coral Springs, the gathering brought together nearly one hundred and fifty priests from the Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, Latin, and Knanaya communities, along with priests from several religious congregations. The diversity of the attendees reflected the wide presence of Malayalam-speaking clergy serving in parishes, chaplaincies, and institutions across the country.

Guests were welcomed with Kerala’s familiar cultural expressions, including thalappoli and traditional percussion, creating a homely atmosphere for clergy who serve far from their native land. The Holy Qurbana was celebrated in Malayalam, led by Bishop Mar Joy Alappatt, with the concelebration of bishops and priests.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami inaugurated the conference and appreciated the dedication of Malayalam Catholic priests to pastoral and social service across the United States. Bishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Angadiath, who completed twenty-five years since episcopal ordination, received greetings and honour during the meeting.

Bishop Mar Joy Alappatt spoke with warmth about the value of shared prayer and fellowship among the clergy, expressing his hope that such gatherings will support the future mission of the Church in America.

Messages of goodwill from Mar Raphael Thattil, Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, Knanaya Vicar General Fr Thomas Mulavanal, and Atlanta Consul General Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan were displayed on screen, adding depth to the occasion.

The conference concluded with the formal opening of the Silver Jubilee Convention of the Diocese of Chicago, scheduled for 9–12 July 2026. A theme song prepared for the Jubilee was presented before the close of the public meeting.

Following this, around one hundred and twenty-five talented performers from the Our Lady of Health Forona Church, Miami, staged Paavanam, a well-received production that reflected devotion and artistic dedication.

The leadership team – Fr George Elambasseril (Chairman), Fr John Melepuram (Co-Patron), and General Convener Joshi Joseph – coordinated the programme with steady commitment. Many committee leads, parish council members, and volunteers contributed to the smooth conduct of the gathering.

Koinonia 2025 stood out as an occasion that strengthened bonds among priests who carry out their ministry across a vast country, and it offered a renewed sense of purpose for the years ahead.
