New York: The Syro-Malankara Catholic community joyfully witnessed the conferral and vesting of Bro. Christopher Thomas with minor orders at the St. Vincent De Paul Syro-Malankara Catholic Cathedral in Elmont, New York. Bro. Christopher’s minor orders were conferred by Most Rev. Philipos Mor Stephanos, the bishop of St. Mary, Queen of Peace Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy in USA and Canada. Also present were Rev. Fr. Varghese Anchanithadathil and Rev. Fr. Jobin Thomas. This significant milestone marks a key moment in Bro. Christopher’s journey towards priesthood.

Background and Education

Bro. Christopher hails from Toronto, Ontario, where he graduated from Queen’s University in 2022. Following his graduation, he joined St. Philip’s Seminary in Toronto the same year. Currently, he continues his seminary formation at the International Pontifical College Maria Mater Ecclesiae in Rome. His dedication to his vocation is supported by his parents, Mr. John Thomas (Appukuttan) and Mrs. Jincy Thomas, and his sister Nisha. The Eparchy extends its heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to them for the gift of their son and brother to the Church.

Understanding Minor Orders

Minor orders are conferred upon seminarians as part of their progression towards priesthood. These orders traditionally include porter, lector, exorcist, and acolyte, although in contemporary practice, the focus is primarily on the roles of lector and acolyte. These orders signify a deepening commitment to the service of the Church and the preparation for the responsibilities of the diaconate and priesthood.

Lector: The lector is entrusted with the reading of Sacred Scripture during liturgical celebrations, except for the Gospel. This role emphasizes the importance of proclaiming the Word of God to the faithful.

Acolyte: The acolyte assists the deacon and priest during liturgical services, particularly in the preparation of the altar and the distribution of Holy Communion. This role underscores the call to serve at the altar and participate actively in the liturgical life of the Church.

International Pontifical College Maria Mater Ecclesiae

The International Pontifical College Maria Mater Ecclesiae in Rome is renowned for its rigorous academic and spiritual formation programs. Established by the Legionaries of Christ, the seminary aims to prepare seminarians for a global mission, emphasizing pastoral care, doctrinal education, and spiritual growth. Several notable clergy members have studied at this esteemed institution, further enhancing its reputation as a leading center for ecclesiastical education.

Bro. Christopher

Bro. Christopher Thomas’s conferral with minor orders is a testament to his dedication and the support of his family and community. As he continues his formation at the International Pontifical College Maria Mater Ecclesiae, we pray for his perseverance and success in his vocation. The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church looks forward to his future contributions to the faith and extends its blessings and encouragement.
