Born on June 15, 1959, in Mallappally, Kerala, Isaac Thottunkal (Cardinal Cleemis) was ordained as a priest in 1986. He later pursued higher studies in Rome and was consecrated as a bishop in 2001, adopting the name Isaac Mar Cleemis. In 2007, he was appointed as the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, becoming the first cardinal of the Syro-Malankara rite.
