Rev. Fr. Jacob John called to Eternal Rest

Rev. Fr. Jacob John, a priest of the Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, is called to eternal reward on 8 November 2013. He was 85 years old.

The funeral service was officiated by the Metropolitan Bishops of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. The service was started at 2.00 p.m. on 9 November 2013 at St. Mary’s Cathedral Church, Punnamood and buried in the Our Lady of Perpatual Help Malankara Catholic Church, Puthiyacavu.

Fr. Jacob John served as a parish priest of about thirty Parishes like, Vakayar, Konni, Mannira, Chempanaruvi, Kokkathodu, Kadammanitta, Vadasserikkara , Vayalathala, Elanthoor, Kayamkulam , Kallumala, Puthencave, etc.

The Government of UAE honoured His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos

During the visit to UAE, His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos was honoured by the UAE Government. Sheikh Ali Al Hashimi, Presidential Advisor for Religious Affairs presented a memento to His Beatitude. Speaking on the occasion he acknowledged the service of the people of India in the development of UAE. In his reply speech, His Beatitude admired the secular policy of UAE and the close relation its government fosters with India and the people of India.

Rev. Fr. Mathew Kandathil, Pastoral Co-ordinator for the Syro-Malankara Catholics in UAE and Mr. M A Yusuff Ali were present at the meeting.

Rev. Sr. Jyothis SIC is called to eternal rest

Rev. Sr. Jyothis SIC, a member of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ, Pathanamthitta Province, is called to eternal reward on Thursday 7 November 2013. She was 64 years old. She belonged to Palavilayil family, Kudassanad, Pandalam. The funeral service was held on Friday, 08 November 2013 at the Provincial House, chapel. His Excellency Most Rev. Yoohanon Mar Chrysostom officiated the service. She is buried in the St. Peter’s Cathedral Cemetery, Pathanamthitta.

Sr. Jyothis served as the Provincial Procurator of Pathanamthitta Province of the SIC for nine years. She was Headmistress of BBHS, Nangiarkulangara and a teacher in various Schools like St. Goretti’s HSS, Nalanchira, St. Mary’s HSS, Kayamkulam and St. Ann’s HSS, Chengannoor.

Rev. Fr Thomas Ponmelil called to Eternal rest

Rev. Fr. Thomas Ponmelil, a priest of the Eparchy of Pathanamthitta of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, was called to eternal reward on 1 November 2013. He was 75 years old. The funeral service was officiated by His Excellency Most Rev. Yoohanon Mar Chrysostom, Bishop of Pathanamthitta with His Grace Most Rev. Thomas Mar Koorilos, Most Rev. Thomas Mar Anthonios and Most Rev. Samuel Mar Irenios on 5 November 2013.

Fr. Thomas Ponmelil was ordained priest on 2 December 1964 at the Eucharist Congress in Bombay by Pope Paul VI, after his priestly formation in St. Aloysius Seminary, Pattom and St. Joseph’s Seminary, Aluva. He rendered service as Rector, St. Aloysius Minor Seminary and Correspondent of MSC Schools of the Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum. He served as parish priest of various parishes in the Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum and the Eparchy of Pathanamthitta.

Rev. Dr. John Padipurackal appointed parish priest in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, Kuwait

Rev. Dr. John Padipurackal is appointed PARISH PRIEST of ST. DANIEL COMBONI PARISH,  Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh (Abbasiya), KUWAIT (one of the four parishes in Kuwait) since April 2013. The parish consists of Latin, Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Faithful.  The Latin faithful are from various parts of India – Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

It is the first time that a Syro-Malankara Priest is appointed parish priest in the whole of the Gulf Region.

Marthoma Bishop visits Mar Eusebius

His Excellency Geevarghese Mar Theodocius Episcopa, Bishop of the Marthoma Diocese of North America visited His Excellency Thomas Mar Eusebius at the Exarchate Chancery on October 29, 2013. It was the first visit of the Head of the Marthoma Church in America to the new Malankara Bishop’s House and Chancery at Elmont. Mar Theodocius was received by Mar Eusebius, Father Abraham Lukose and Father Michael Edathil. Mar Theodocius was accompanied by his secretary Father Geevarghese.

Special Pastor Appointed for the Syro Malankara Catholics in Australia

In reference to the decision of the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and in consultation with His Grace the Most Rev. Philip Wilson, Archbishop of Adelaide, His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, the Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church appointed Rev. Fr. Stephen Kulathumkarott as Special Pastor of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Faithful in Australia for a period of four years. The appointment was done on 9 October 2013.

According to the decision of the Holy Episcopal Synod His Beatitude the Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church had deputed Most Rev. Thomas Mar Anthonios OIC,the Curia Bishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church to visit the Malankara Catholics and their Local Ordinaries in Australia. He visited our people and their Local Ordinaries Australia in cities like Adelaide, Brisbane, Katherine,Canberra, Darwin, Melbourne and Sydney from 15 to 31 December 2011. He also contacted our people in cities like Perth. The report of the visitation was submitted to the Holy Episcopal Synod.

Rev. Fr. Stephen Kulathinkarott arrived in Adelaide on 18 October 2013 and was received by the Syro-Malankara Catholics and other Kerala Catholics in Adelaide and the Adelaide Archdiocesan authorities at the air port and was accorded a grand reception. He is coming into contact with our people in Australia. Fr.Stephen Kulathinkarottu is from the Eparchy of Mavelikara and is also appointed to serve the Archdiocese of Adelaide.

19th Feast of Commemoration of Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios

The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church celebrated the 19th Feast of Commemoration of His Grace Benedict Mar Gregorios, the Second Metropolitan Archbishop, on 9 & 10 October 2013. As part of the commemoration Malankara Social Service Society conducted a seminar on Development on 9 October at Catholicate Centre auditorium. Rev. Dr. Jacob Naluparayil (Editor, Karunikan), Dr. Kurias Kumblakuzhy(Kerala State Information Commissioner), Sri. V.M Sudheeran and Sri. Binoy Visham presented the different themes on Development. Rev. Fr. Romance Antony (Director, Kerala Social Service Forum) and Sri. P.P James (President, Trivandrum Press Club) were the moderators. A memorial meeting was held in the afternoon. The meeting was presided by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos and it was inaugurated by G. Karthikayan (Hon’ble Speaker, State Legislative Assembly), Most Rev. Dr. Joshua Mar Ignathios and Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios made benedictory address.

Santhi Yathra organized by MCA started from St. Thomas Church, Nalanchira to the Tomb of Mar Gregorios at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Pattom and it was inaugurated by His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Joshua Mar Ignathios . Priests, religious, and faithful participated in the Santhi Yathra. It was followed by evening prayer and Dhoopaprarthana at Tomb chapel.

On 10 October at 8 a.m. the Holy Qurbono was concelebrated by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos with Most Rev. Dr. Joshua Mar Ignathios, Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios, Most Rev. Dr. Philipos Mar Stephanos and many Rev. Priests at the Cathedral. In his memorial Speech at Tomb Chapel after the Holy Qurbono, His Beatitude remembered Benedict Mar Gregorios as a great visionary, a great lover of the Church community and the Community at large. Saplings were distributed in memory of Mar Gregorios who was true lover and friend of trees.

It was followed by the Dhoopaprarthana. The celebrations were concluded with the distribution of Nercha. Many Priests, Religious and faithful participated in the celebration.

Mariolsavam 2013, Kuwait

Mariolsavam is an annual festival in honour of Mary, Mother of God, conducted in the St. Daniel Comboni Parish in Kuwait in the third Friday of October every year. This year Reverend Fr. Daniel Poovannathil, Vicar, Malankara Catholic Church, Kodumon (Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum) was invited as the preacher for Mariolsavam, which took place on 8 October 2013. He gave orientation talks in all the parishes before Mariolsavam. Not less than five thousand faithful took part in Mariolsavam. Fr. Daniel Poovannathil also preached during Holy Qurbonos of the various Rites and addressed groups such as Jesus Youth, Nurses Ministry, Yuvajyothi (Youth Ministry of Kuwait Malankara Rite Movement) Family Ministry -Couples and Prayer Groups.

The Malankara Catholic Community in Kuwait considers the appreciation of the faithful all over the parishes towards the preaching and service of Fr. Daniel Poovannathil as a matter of great pride. The Malankara Catholic Community along with the Catholic Faithful in Kuwait pray that God give him several years in the ministry of the Word and wish him all the best.

Rev. Fr Mathew Chundamannil called to Eternal rest

Rev. Fr Mathew Chundamannil (83) a priest of the Archieparchy of Tiruvalla of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church is called to eternal rest on Friday 27 September 2013. On Monday 30 September at 11 a.m. onwards the mortal remains will be at Snehasadan, Kuttoor for public tribute and then the funeral service will begin at 3 p.m at St. John’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Tiruvalla. His Grace Dr Thomas Mar Koorilos, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tiruvalla will officiate the services. Rev. Fr Mathew Chundamannil was born on 15 November 1930 as the son of Mathai and Saramma. He was ordained priest on 21st March 1961 by Rt. Rev. James Mendolpha at Thriruchirappally. He served as a parish priest in various parishes: Vennikulam, Thachamam, Valankara, Ambattubagam, Valakuzhy, Maramon, Poovathoor, Kadamankulam, Kallooppara, Thottabhagaom, Pulikeezhu and Eraviperoor.
