Rev. Dr. George Oonnoonny & Rev. Fr. Jobin Thomas attend the 84th Annual Convention of the Canon Law Society of America

Rev. Dr. George Oonnoonny and Rev. Fr. Jobin Thomas represented the St. Mary Queen of Peace Eparchy at the 84th Annual Convention of the Canon Law Society of America (CLSA) which was held in Cleveland, Ohio. 400 members of the Canon Law Society of America gathered in Cleveland from October 10-13, 2022. A variety of canonical topics were discussed including gender identity, lack of faith/marriage invalidity, sacramental record-keeping, sanctity, holiness and canonization, vulnerable persons and the law, issues related to baptism, technology for governance, outdoor weddings and canonical guidance for Latin clergy and laity serving Eastern Catholics.

Rev. Dr. George Oonnoonny presently serves as the Eparchial Tribunal’s Judicial Vicar and Rev. Fr. Jobin Thomas serves as the Ecclesiastical Notary for the Tribunal and is presently in the 2nd year of his Licentiate in Canon Law (JCL) program offered by St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada.

Bishop Stephanos attends Columbus Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York

The Eparchial Bishop, His Excellency Philipos Mar Stephanos, and Rev. Fr. Noby Ayyaneth attended the 45th annual Columbus Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on October 10, 2021. The annual Mass celebrates Italian heritage and the unique contribution of Italian Americans to New York City and the country. Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, was the principal celebrant. His Excellency Philipos Mar Stephanos joined Bishop Robert Brennan, Bishop Emeritus Nicholas DiMarzio, and the Auxiliary Bishops from the Archdiocese of New York as concelebrants. The Bishops were joined by priests of their dioceses in concelebrating the Mass.

On Wednesday, Saturday, October 1, 2022, the Eparchial Bishop, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Philipos Mar Stephanos attended the Episcopal Installation of Mar Joy Alappatt, the second (2nd) Eparchial Bishop of Chicago for the Syro-Malabar Church in the United States of America. The Installation was done by His Beatitude, Major Archbishop George Cardinal Alencherry, in the presence of The Most Reverend Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America. On behalf of the Eparchial Bishop, Mar Stephanos, the clergy, religious and lay faithful of St. Mary Queen of Peace Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy in the USA & Canada, the Eparchy extends her prayerful best wishes and prayers to Most Rev. Eparchial Priests Retreat North America

The priests of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy had their annual retreat from September 26 to 30, 2022 at the Don Bosco Retreat Center, in Stony Point, New York. His Excellency Dr. Philipos Mar Stephanos and 21 priests participated in the retreat. Rev. Tom Joseph OFM Cap. was the retreat preacher. The thought-provoking preaching of Fr. Tom coupled with the serene and scenic atmosphere of the retreat center helped the retreatants to spend four enriching days in prayer and reflection. The occasion was also used to convene an official meeting of the Presbyteral Council of the Eparchy.

Bro. Christopher Thomas begins his Seminary Formation

Christopher Thomas of the St. Mary Syro-Malankara Catholic Church Toronto, Canada has been accepted as a seminarian for the Eparchy and is beginning his Philosophy studies at St. Philip Neri Seminary in downtown Toronto. Dr. Philipos Mar Stephanos, all the clergy, the religious, and the lay faithful, the Eparchy extends her prayerful best wishes and hearty congratulations to Bro. Christopher. Malankara Syrian Catholic Church gets two new Episcopos (Bishops)

On Friday, July 15, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church was blessed with 2 new bishops. Most Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Polycarpos became the Auxiliary Bishop of the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum and Most Rev. Dr. Antony Mar Silvanos became the Bishop of the Major Archepiscopal Curia.

At 8 o’clock in the morning, a worshipful reception was given to the distinguished guests. Moran More Baselios Cardinal Clemis, the head of the Malankara Syriac Catholic Church, presided over the consecration service.

Other fathers of the church assisted the services. Pala Diocese Bishop Abhiwandya Mar Joseph Kallarangat delivered the sermon at the consecration service. Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Ambassador of the Vatican to India, conveyed his greetings and spoke. Syro Malabar Church Bishop Cardinal Mar George Alencheri, Thiruvananthapuram Latin Archdiocese Bishop Archbishop Dr. Thomas J. Neto and offered their best wishes. 69th Commemoration of Archbishop Mar Ivanios and Episcopal Consecrations

The 69th commemoration of the death of the Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios and the Episcopal consecrations of the Rev. Fr. Mathew Manakkaravayil, the newly appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Major Archiepiscopal Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram, and the Rev. Fr. Antony Kakkanat, the newly appointed Bishop of the Major Archepiscopal Curia, will be held on July 15, 2022, at the St. Mary’s Cathedral Church in Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram.

The program will begin at 8:00 AM with a reception for the bishops and distinguished guests, followed by morning prayers. The Holy Mass and the Episcopal consecrations will then be held.

The main celebrant of the services will be His Beatitude Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the head and father of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church. Other bishops of the church will serve as co-celebrants.

Rev. Joseph Kallarangatt, the Archbishop of Pala Diocese, will deliver the homily.

A public meeting will be held after the Holy Mass. The meeting will be addressed by His Eminence Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, the head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, and His Grace Thomas J. Netto, the Archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram Latin Archdiocese.

Appointment of New Vicar General for the Eparchy of Delhi-Gurgaon

The Syro Malankara Catholic Church is pleased to announce the appointment of Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Vallikattu as the new Vicar General (Protosyncellus) of the Delhi-Gurgaon Diocese.

The announcement was made at the Eparchy of St. John Chrysostom, Gurgaon-Delhi. H.E. Aboon Thomas Mar Anthonios OIC has entrusted this important role to Fr. Varghese Vallikattu, recognizing his dedication and service to the Church.

Additionally, Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Vinayanand OIC has been appointed as the new Syncellus of the Eparchy.

The priests, religious, and laity extend their heartfelt congratulations to the new Curia office bearers. They send their best wishes for their future endeavors and pray for abundant grace to lead the Eparchy forward alongside dear Aboon.

Investiture ceremony for the 7th batch of Malankara Syrian Catholic Suvishesha Sangam

The commissioning service for the 7th batch of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Evangelistic Team, who completed their diocesan-level training, will be conducted on June 25 2022, Saturday.

The ceremony will take place at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. The service will be officiated by Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the head and father of the Church, and the Bishop of Pathanamthitta Diocese, the venerable Samuel Mar Irenios Metropolitan.

The investiture ceremony is a significant event for the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church. It is a sign of the church’s commitment to spreading the Gospel message and serving the poor and marginalized.
